UCSD Class Instructors

Tomohiro Arashiro began learning Ryuei Ryu under Kenko Nakaima in Okinawa, Japan at the age of 13. Arashiro Kyoshi was the captain of his collegiate karate team at Chukyo University. In 1979, Arashiro Kyoshi was chosen to bring Ryuei Ryu to the U.S. along with his friend and fellow student Tsutomu Kuniyoshi. Arashiro Kyoshi is the Pan American Chief Instructor of Ryuei Ryu.

Alfonso Gomez started in judo in 1969 and received his shodan in 1974. Gomez Shihan's karate training began in 1976, and he became affiliated with Ryuei Ryu Karate under Arashiro Kyoshi in 1992. Gomez Shihan has been the chief Okinawan Karate instructor at the University of California, San Diego, since 1986. Over the past twenty years, his efforts have produced many junior and collegiate champions.
Ophira Bergman began her martial arts training in 1979 and received her shodan in 1988. She now holds the rank of 4th Dan. Miss Bergman is a past national champion and collegiate champion. Miss Bergman is the UCSD collegiate karate team instructor.
Chiyo Maruyama began her martial arts training in 1998. She received her shodan in 2004 and her nidan in 2008. She is a past AAU National Champion. Miss Maruyama is the instructor of the mini kids karate class and beginner collegiate classes.
Tony Arashiro began his martial arts training in 1995. He received his shodan in 2001 and nidan in 2009. He is a current member of the national United States karate team. Tony is the instructor of the junior karate program.
Brahman Gnad began his martial arts training in 1999 as an undergraduate at UC San Diego and received his shodan in 2004. He is a certified Fitness Instructor.  Mr. Gnad is the kumite and conditioning instructor.
